Podcast 86: Creating a Thriving Mindset
Oct 14, 2021Your mindset reflects how you experience the world and is based on a collection of your thoughts and beliefs. These help you to navigate your reality which affects your inclination towards things and your attitude. Your mindset determines how you interpret life, respond to situations and the habits you build.
Simply put, your mindset shapes your thoughts, which impact your feelings and are reflected in your behaviours.
Mindset is key to thriving as a practitioner and it can easily deceive you and keep you playing small, but the great news is - your mindset can be changed and developed.
What Stories are you Telling Yourself?
The stories you tell yourself are a window into your mindset.
If you’re struggling anywhere in your business, listen in on the stories you’re telling yourself about it. You may find you are constantly thinking about the situation in an unhelpful way. The stories you’re running are masking limiting beliefs you have about the situation.
When you say these stories enough to yourself, it reinforces your beliefs, and you store them as facts. You unconsciously look for evidence to back them up and guess what, you’ll find it!
For example, if you don’t believe you can be successful, you will notice all the areas of your life where you feel you’re failing. This won’t be limited to your business, it could include your diet, your bank account, your wardrobe, basically anything that signifies success to you.
You’ll notice other practitioners and make assumptions about how well they’re doing. You start to compare yourself to them and jump to the conclusion they’re doing so much better than you. This then feeds back into the story that you will never be successful and around you go again.
Identify the story
Start by working out exactly what the story is you’re repeating. You may find you’ve been telling yourself the story for so long you don’t even recognise it as a story anymore.
The story will show up in your thoughts and justify why things are the way they are. They will nag at you and reinforce your reasoning as to why things are the way they are.
It’s time to decide if it’s useful to you, or whether it’s no longer serving you and it’s time to move on and start a new story with a happy ending.
These stories are just thoughts and beliefs that are keeping you from thriving and if they are limiting you, destructive or negative, they need to be addressed.
Decide your new story
Rather than allowing the old story to determine your future, decide what you want your new story to be. How can you change your story to make it empowering? What needs to appear in your new story to help you create a thriving business?
In the previous example, you may decide your new story is: you are deserving and capable of being successful and you’re willing to do the work necessary to earn a comfortable living as a practitioner.
Make sure the new story is created using positive language so you’re giving your brain absolute direction for where you want to go.
Supporting your new story
Affirm your new story to yourself regularly, make it part of your daily routines to tell yourself your new story. Actively look for evidence to support your new story and celebrate anything that you achieve which takes you a step closer to it.
Anytime you hear yourself repeating your old story, literally tell yourself to “stop” and replace it with your new one. Your brain is used to running the old story, so it needs to be reminded until it starts to automatically tell you the new one
Spend a few minutes each day imagining how your business and life will be with your new story running. What are you doing? How are you helping your clients? How great do you feel? This will help to stabilise your new belief and develop a thriving mindset.
If you have a preferred personal development technique, use it to help you create a thriving mindset. Remember we’re human and we’re all work in progress – be kind to yourself but reinforce your new story with the action you take.
Your new story may not bring an abundance overnight, new opportunities will start to present themselves. Take a step towards it each day and before you know it the new story will soon become your new reality. What are you going to do today to act on your new story?
